
Heating systems
Heating systems are generally classified into two main categories: direct heating systems and indirect heating systems. Each type operates differently and is suited to particular applications.
Direct Heating Systems
A direct heating system provides heat to individual rooms using separate, self-contained heating appliances. Common examples include gas, electric, and solid-fuel (coal or wood) heaters installed within domestic properties.
The cost of installing a direct heating system depends largely on the size and complexity of the installation. For smaller buildings, these systems are relatively inexpensive to install and can be expanded easily if additional heating is required in the future. Individual room temperature control is straightforward, although coordinating the operation of multiple heaters throughout a building can be more difficult because each unit operates independently. Furthermore, every heater requires its own fuel supply and, where applicable, a dedicated flue for the safe removal of combustion gases.
Due to their simplicity and cost-effectiveness, direct heating systems are widely used in residential, commercial, and industrial buildings.
Indirect Heating Systems
Indirect heating systems, commonly referred to as central heating systems in domestic buildings, generate heat at a single central source, typically a boiler. The heat is then distributed throughout the building by means of a heat transfer medium such as hot water, steam, or warm air.
When water or steam is used, it is conveyed through a network of pipes, whereas warm air is distributed via ductwork. In each heated space, heat emitters such as radiators, convectors, or air terminals transfer the heat from the distribution system into the room, maintaining the desired indoor temperature.
By producing heat at a central location and distributing it efficiently throughout the building, indirect heating systems provide a practical and effective solution for heating larger or multi-room properties.
